Can't you just smell the ocean? The pine trees? Can you just feel the history? Isn't that Walt Whitman walking over the Brooklyn Bridge? Our webzine will explore beneath the surface to uncover the unique elements of Long Island, New York. Our original stories, personal essays, photo articles and profiles of unusual Long Islanders will portray the unique identity of our region.

Yes, Long Island is different. Exceptional. But just like other regions within our diversified nation, our area has unifying elements, too. Portrayals of non-profit groups and educational institutions will also show what brings us together as a community. There will be listings of opportunities to get involved. Ways to contribute and share with your neighbors. Listings of opportunities to have fun --- to divert, entertain and enlighten.

We ask for your participation. Read our site. Investigate and explore around you. Respond with your original words that reflect your own opinions, stories and thoughts. Watch as we develop a site as unique as the vistas we see each and every day. Welcome.

New Directions in Employee Communications
Presented by Michael Zimet, President, Dialogue Solutions

by Joyce Litwin Zimmerman

Veteran communicator Michael Zimet, president of Dialogue Solutions, encourages companies and other organizations to adopt two-way communication.

Traditional vehicles, such as publications, videos and speeches, are "downward" -- management does all the talking, and information only flows one way. Today, he says, that's just not good enough to engage employees and make them feel that management cares about communicating with them.

Instead, he encourages companies to "create a dialogue, where employees can initiate communication and express their attitudes, ideas and feelings. This opens up an exchange of information and ideas between employees and management that's missing in many of today's organizations."

There are many ways to do this, he added, depending upon each organization's culture and style. Among the examples he cited were town hall meetings, an FAQ (frequently-asked questions) column, write-in programs, executive-hosted "brown bag" lunches, intranet newsgroups, publication reply cards and "graffiti boards."

Zimet spoke at the May 2002 meeting. His consulting practice specializes in assessments that give clients a "finger on the pulse" of their organizations' issues and needs through innovative focus groups, surveys and interviewing. He also helps them develop strategies and programs that are designed to improve morale, productivity, and trust and confidence in management. His clients have included such companies as Merck, Prudential, Intel, MasterCard International and IBM.
