KEYS TO EFFECTIVE BUSINESS E-MAIL

Here are just a few guidelines to effectively communicate via this convenient method:

  • Ask, “Who really needs to get this memo?”
  • Make the subject line factual so the e-mail isn’t deleted.
  • What is your main objective? Include desired actions and dates for completion.
  • Keep the message short; limit each e-mail to one subject.
  • For a more complex subject matter, break the material up into understandable chunks.
  • Avoid humor or sarcasm which may be misinterpreted.
Don’t depend on “spell” or “grammar check.”  Print out important documents and verify spelling and grammar yourself -- and have a second person give it a read.
