The Power of The Written Word

Written by Joyce Litwin Zimmerman, President, Joywriter Communication, Ltd.

Our business can be enhanced or hindered by how we communicate.

Whether we are confirming a previous conversation, an appointment or trying to obtain some repeat business, we need to determine the best way to send that message. Should we call or E-mail? And what about the often-neglected handwritten note?

Deciding which way to send a message can depend on previously stated preferences or some old-fashioned common sense.

An E-mail would work to confirm the details of yesterday’s meeting, but picking up the phone to arrange where and when to have lunch might be easier than numerous word-trips via the World Wide Web. E-mail -- or call-- to say, “Perhaps it’s time to take a fresh look” at collateral materials/ logo design/art work; another option might be a postcard with our own handwritten personal regards. Share some personal information and some industry news when E-mailing, but “snail-mail” a relevant news clip along with a handwritten note.

And let’s not forget what our mothers said: “Write a thank you note.” This much overlooked form says we appreciate that job or client referral, industry tip or just the opportunity to “talk shop.” In this case, there may be nothing more powerful than using paper and pen.
